How often do you forget your password?

We’ve all been there: you sit down at your desk with a freshly-poured coffee, list your daily to-do’s, and navigate to your favourite web-based software (ahem! Re-TRAC). As you type in your username and tab to the next field, your mind suddenly goes blank.

As the minutes tick by, you become sure that the blinking cursor in the password field is laughing at you in morse code. The complex series of letters and numbers you so ingeniously designed to keep intruders from accessing your account has stumped even you – the great password architect! This frustrating experience always ends with a renewed vow to “write it down this time”.

Don’t worry; you’re not alone. In 2011, PayPal and the Center for Internet Security at the University of Canberra surveyed over 1,000 Australians about password management and found that over 41% of respondents forgot their password on a monthly basis.

In the past two months, over 800 Re-TRAC users have reset their passwords.

The good news is that elusive passwords are not a new problem. Nearly all web-based software include a method to securely reset passwords. That means that in less than 3 minutes you can reset your password and log into your favourite waste diversion software as if nothing ever happened.

So the next time you’re cursing the Log In page due to a forgotten password, simply click “Forgot your password?”, and check your email (including your junk folder). Before you know it, you’ll be generating eye-catching reports to share on your Re-TRAC Profile… at least until you reset your password next month. After all, it’s good practice to change your password often to protect your privacy.
